The Wrong Way to Weight Loss with Maya Nahra

Maya embodies beauty inside and out; she radiates a healthy way of living that exudes joyful energy. And she has a mission to help women unbind themselves from binding food thoughts. At one point, Maya weighed 250 pounds and lost the weight the wrong way – her mission is to educate women on healthy choices and to follow their internal guidance system to arrive at a healthy lifestyle.

One of my favorite ‘tweetable” from our conversation together is …

In everything you do, you will always be on the right path if you are feeling good.

Words to live by, indeed.

  • Nowadays, nutrition has become so complicated. Everyday I hear about food that I believe to be healthy is now unhealthy or vice versa. It’s almost as if I need a degree in nutrition to navigate the supermarket! There are so many people struggling with weight loss and they really need a guide like, Maya, to bring in both mindfulness and knowledge. Thanks, Sheila, for highlighting Maya as I love hearing about women’s journey to health.

  • I love Maya’s healthy convenience focus. I eat a very healthy diet (vegetarian, gluten-free, organic, whole, very little sugar, no processed stuff) but I’m busy. I want to eat a healthy diet that’s also quick and easy. I’ve discovered how to do that for myself because nutrition is a priority for me. But so many people haven’t discovered it. They go to the unhealthy convenience. And that has resulted in so many negative things in our society, I think. I’m glad that Maya is doing what she’s doing. Thanks for featuring her!

She’s also so right about deciding what you want and why you want it (authentically). Really, that applies to any goal or vision we set.

  • I agree with what was said in the comments above. Nutrition has gotten very complicated. For a while, I thought raw foods was absolutely the way to go. Then, I delved in deeper and realized humans aren’t able to break down cellulose (not sure if that’s right), which encapsulates the vegetables nutrients, as well as other animals. Now I know there are certain raw foods that just don’t do well with my digestive system. It’s definitely a process of experimenting and listening to your body.

I love what Maya said about her aha moment, “You’re healthy, just eat.” A mindshift has to happen!

  • I’m with Leanne. I love the idea of healthy convenience! It’s become far too easy to order a takeaway or stick a frozen meal in the microwave or oven. Many people think it takes too much effort to make a meal from scratch every night. And sometimes, after a long day at work, I agree that the effort seems like too much! But healthy eating can be so easy and, as Maya said, empowering. We just need to be equipped with the tools and knowledge to make this possible.

    Great interview!

  • Maya, has certainly seen the extreme ups and downs of “eating”.
Way to go – from model to nutritionist!
Hardly any of us know how to listen to our bodies anymore or even know what’s in our food that we buy and eat on a daily basis. Nutrition is one of our super basic needs that we have just “forgotten” about somehow, or are completely unaware of, as to what we are putting into our bodies.
There should be more teachers like Maya out there!

  • Thanks for sharing such a great video, Sheila! I loved hearing terms like “healthy convenience” and “authentic reason” – I’ve never heard of these being used before and I must say that they resonated with me. I think re-framing our mindset to thinking with these terms can help us shift in to a more positive direction with our health and well being.

  • Love that you ladies loved + resonated! As far as the ‘nutrition confusion,’ I agree and one quote from Buddha sums it up quite nicely: “Believe nothing. No matter where you read it, or who said it, even if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.”

    hugs
    Maya

  • I also love the term “healthy convenience”. It is SO hard to find these two things together. Or you come up with one or two options…but then get board with those options quickly. I love Maya’s energy and her genuine nature. Thank you for featuring her!

  • So true when Maya says that the US is not set up for healthy eating and so define what you want and why you want it! Love the expression “Authentic reason”!
I have a background as a Nutritional Consultant and know how much confusion there is around food. Awareness of your own body really helps with finding what serves your wellbeing the best.
Which brings us to your tweet Sheila! Thank you!

  • Maya this is such a powerful video/message! Its so great to hear someone’s journey and learning to trust and LOVE the body you have been gifted. I know how tough those dark corners can be as a recovered disordered eater.

I loved the tweetable – “In everything you do, you will always be on the right path if you are feeling good.”

    Thank YOU

  • Feelings and using the next feeling we want to have can serve as our map. Like the Billy Jean video by Michael Jackson :), the next step lights up and shows the way if get ‘intentful’ (great word by the way) as to how we want to feel. Maya seems to have used this well.

  • Healthy convenience – great concept. My husband and I were thinking of trying the paleo diet but it seems it’s not “travelable” – as in when you’re traveling, it’s almost impossible to keep up. This is why nutrition is so complicated.

  • Such a great interview. I loved when Maya said that “it’s in your deepest darkest corners that you find your greatest treasures.” It’s those dark places that seem to really bring out our greatest truths and powers. We are given so much terrible information about nutrition in our country, it’s so important that we educate ourselves. After spending years eating many of the unhealthy items talked about in this video I now try to ‘eat of the earth’ as much as possible. Love the terming of “intentful eating”, that’s exactly what we all should be doing! Thanks for this interview!
