Goddess of the Month ~ Terpsichore

Terpsichore was one of the nine Muses of ancient Greece. She is the Muse of dancing and dramatic chorus as her name itself means “delight of dancing.” She usually carries a lyre. Before the time of man, Terpsichore was content to wile away the centuries with her sisters (the other muses) playing in the clouds, chasing rainbows and basking in the sunlight. Each morning, she would awaken her sisters by gracefully dancing to arouse them from their slumber, brushing them with ‘Terpshichore’s Gift’ upon their forehead. Terpsichore gifted each of her siblings with the divine christening of momentum, enabling each to set into motion her every whim and heart’s desire. And so it was, with Terpsichore’s Gift, each muse found her calling. It is said that Terpsichore wept with joy at the beauty all around her and her tears rained down to the earth below awakening Mother Nature and setting all of life in a dance of fluid motion.

Inviting Terpsichore into the Modern Goddess’ World

Action Steps:

See all of life as a dance. Take notice of the fluidity of the trees swaying in the breeze, the water as it crashes against the shore, and the hummingbirds in flight. Even the most mundane of items like an abandoned plastic bag has an elaborate dance of its own when caught in the wind. As I sit in my porch this morning, I see the shadows of the leaves against my patio furniture in a dramatic play orchestrated only by the wind. As I let my mind wander, I imagine the shadows as people laughing and playing, running, dancing and embracing.

Add dance to your day. Set a timer if you are prone to forgetting, so that several times a day you remember to shake your bones and wiggle your body, especially if you have a desk job or are confined to sitting for long stretches of time. Call out ‘Dance Break’ or ‘Mambo Jambo!’ or whatever it takes to get you up and moving. Break out in song and let your Terpsichore within out to play.

Put into motion one of your heart’s desires. What have you been wanting to do or be that you keep putting off until tomorrow. Set your intention and start taking action towards it NOW, there is no better time than the present. If you feel stuck, list out all of the reasons you cannot do what you want to do on a piece of paper. Then review that list and ask yourself, is that REALLY true? Or is it just my way of stopping the energetic flow and putting the blame outside myself? For years, and I mean YEARS, I wanted to take yoga classes, yet because I have a family member in the fitness business (yet did not offer yoga), I believed that I could not betray trust and loyalty by going to the competitor in my neighborhood. When I realized what was stopping me MAY NOT BE TRUE, I explained the situation to my sister and she understood it was not a betrayal or a reflection on her, and it was something I needed to do for myself. My yoga practice has made a huge impact on the quality of my mind and life far beyond what I was able to do with yoga videos in my own home. So what is it you have always wanted to do or be that you have not put in motion, yet? Now is the time.

Affirmation:

I dance through my day with delight.

Meditation:

Once again, I turn to NIA dancing as it is a perfect moving meditation to illuminate Terpsichore’s essence in all of us.
