Goddess of the Month ~ Haile Thomas

Haile ThomasCreative, capable, confident, beautiful, and guided by a mission, only begins to describe my next Goddess of the Month, Haile Thomas. At only 10 years old (soon to be 11), Haile’s resume and list of accomplishments are more impressive than many after a lifetime in the biz. Fueled by the passion to change her own family’s eating habits after her father was diagnosed with diabetes (which was successfully managed through lifestyle changes rather than meds), Haile decided to provide this new-found knowledge to others with the help of her mother, Charmaine, and 7-year-old sister, Nia, and their online business was born.

Haile and Nia are hosts to an online cooking show, Kids Can Cook, created in May of 2010. Catapulting her career, Haile is now part of Jaime Oliver’s Food Revolution, a guest chef on Sisboombah has appeared on Tedx in Vancouver and Tucson, is on the Youth Advisory Board for the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, and is currently (as I write this) in Washington speaking to 700 Civic Leaders along side Michelle Obama. I tried to coax out a little name dropping during the interview, but Haile is so modest, calm, cool, and collected that she did not reveal that tidbit as the Alliance had asked her not to share prior to the event.

And Haile shows no signs of slowing down since the launch of Kids Can Cook, she has also founded Healthy Girls Adventure’s Club, is working on a Green Apple project, soon to be released, and envisions a Wellness Center in her future. See for yourself, how charming and intelligent, Haile is in this interview/cooking demonstration…

More on the other organizations:

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation works to address one of the nation’s leading public health threats—childhood obesity. The goal of the Alliance is to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity by 2015 and to empower kids nationwide to make healthy lifestyle choices. Founded in 2005 by the American Heart Association and William J. Clinton Foundation, the Alliance works to positively affect the places that can make a difference in a child’s health: homes, schools, doctor’s offices, and communities.

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution –

We’re losing the war against obesity in the US. It’s sad, but true. Our kids are growing up overweight and malnourished from a diet of processed foods, and today’s children will be the first generation ever to live shorter lives than their parents. It’s time for a change. It’s time for a Food Revolution.

“Since I’ve been working in America, I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of people who have come out to support the Food Revolution. More than 630,000 people have signed the petition, over 300,000 of you subscribe to our newsletter and thousands of you have written to me. The only message I keep hearing is that you believe your kids need better food, and that you want help to keep cooking skills alive. That’s why this Food Revolution matters.”

Jamie Oliver

The problem stems from the loss of cooking skills at home and the availability of processed foods at every turn, from the school cafeteria to church function halls, factories, and offices. This Food Revolution is about saving lives by inspiring everyone: moms, dads, kids, teens, and cafeteria workers to get back to basics and start cooking good food from scratch.
