Goddess of the Month ~ Aestas

Aestas, whose name means the fiery heat of the summer sun in Latin, is the Roman personification of summer.  She is described as standing by the emerald throne of Phoebus, the Sun-god, and is naked except for a garland of flowers and grain or wheat-sheaves in her hair. She reminds us to be grateful and enjoy all of the beauty and abundance of the summer season. Aestas is one of the Roman’s many personifications of time and seasons. This goddess, in particular, reminds us to live mindfully in the present moment. She is associated with the Summer Solstice  and a celebration of all the beauty summer has to offer.

Inviting Aestas into the Modern Goddess’ World

Action Steps:

Spend more time in nature. Nature is a beautiful role model for life. There is a time and a season for everything, it cannot be rushed, pushed or moved forward just because of a desire for it to be.  Appreciate nature’s beauty, and acknowledge how easily and effortlessly it is so. The grass does not strain or struggle to grow, it simply allows the sun and rain to bathe and nourish it at the very core and the process unfolds naturally, graciously and beautifully, all in divine time. Reflect on whether you are allowing and receiving in your life or if you are trying to force things to happen. Nature reminds us to practice the art of surrender.

Plant, pick and decorate with flowers.
Adorn your living space with fresh cut flowers from your garden or the farmer’s market, if you prefer to borrow from another’s green thumb. Getting out into the yard and playing in the dirt is a great way to connect with Mother Nature… you may even choose to relive your childhood days making mud pies, just don’t try to get the neighbor kid to eat it. If you do not have a yard or garden of your own, consider working on a community plot and learn about the vegetation process or plant small pots of herbs for a windowsill garden.

Bring more consciousness  to your day. The lazy days of summer are a perfect time for a walking meditation, being in no particular hurry to be anywhere, just allowing yourself to experience all the sights, sounds, scents and feelings of summer’s glory. Pay attention to all of your senses, breathing in the summer’s warmth, listening to the song of the birds and the wind whistling in the trees, feeling the soft breeze against your skin. Go barefoot and enjoy the sensation from the thousands of nerve endings in your feet as you feel the grass or sand of the beach or desert beneath your toes. Breathe in the scents of the fresh cut grass, the flowers in bloom or the distinct, cleansing smell of a rain shower.

Get naked. Take advantage of the warmth of the season and sleep in the nude. Get used to spending a little extra time in your birthday suit than you normally would, give thanks and grow to appreciate the wonders and magnificence of your body and all it does for you. If you are like many of us, you may have learned to be embarrassed or ashamed of your body and are quick to hide under clothing as soon as possible. Spending a few more minutes a day appreciating your body after your shower and when going to bed at night, may help heal any dissatisfaction you may have with your body.

Affirmation:

I seize the day and savor the beauty of every moment.
